The Kukulkan Castle
"The Feathered Serpent" measures 60 meters per side at the base. It rises in nine descending sections to a height of 24, thus reaching the table that supports the temple, and it raises its walls eight meters higher. Each façade or front of the pyramidal mass has a wide staircase made up of 91 stone steps, a set that makes up 364 steps, and added the ground, or the upper platform, 365. The stairs of the Castle finish, at ground level, colossal sculptural heads, in the shape of a snake. In 1930, thanks to Mexican archaeological work carried out on the Castle, the existence of an internal pyramidal building was confirmed, with a staircase only on the northern side. Similar to the exterior, it is composed of a pyramid base and a sanctuary located above. Like the external pyramid, the interior consists of nine descending bodies, and houses an impressive statue of Chac Mool. His eyes, teeth and nails are made of bone, skillfully applied to the stone. He kept the splendid sculpture of a monolithic tiger, painted in dazzling red. Its jaws are open, and its eyes are a pair of round jade plates.
The Caracol complex consists, in essence, of three parts: the Tower itself, a circular building, and two overlapping rectangular platforms or terraces, the lower one of course larger in size, and from which the round structure rises, with an internal spiral staircase, a circumstance to which it owes its name.
